    Hey anybody,
I accept a form 2/3 class and everyday I read to them out of a class novel for about 10 minutes to aid settle them for the afternoon. We have discussions about the book as a grade, simply it'due south not used as a formal novel study or anything, just enjoyment (and to become them calm). I'yard almost prepare to get-go a new novel, and was trying to observe one that I think they would like. I think reading the Lion, The Witch, and The Wardrobe in elementary school and loving information technology, just I was a bit older than they are. Would this novel be a flake too "old" for them (not in terms of reading levels, merely in terms of the blazon of content)? I'1000 just trying to think if there's anything that could be considered inappropriate for their age level.

    Thanks!

I used information technology with fifth. Information technology went well. Are you planning to explore the religious symbolism? I didn't do much at all with it.

I used it as a novel written report in 4th grade many years ago.

consider your audience. At a few elementary schools in my district the very liberal parents would throw a fit over a Christian novel beingness read out to the students.

I would not read in grade two/iii. Remember whatever you read is going to turn kids on to wanting to check out those tiltes to read on their own. Other titles that are more on level include:
    Clementine series
    The stories Juilan tells series
    Beverly Cleary books
    Magic Tree Firm
    Some Andrew Clements titles

I was going to recommend Beverly Cleary as well. I apply Narnia books in book clubs in 5th, but I remember they're a niggling loftier for ii/3. Frindle by Andrew Clements would be adept, as well.

I'd be iffy using it with unproblematic students at all, considering of the religious undertones, but if y'all teach in a school where that won't be a problem, I think it would be fine with third graders. 2nd grade is probably a little immature though.

Cheers for the responses anybody! If it was a straight grade 3 class, I would probably feel comfortable reading it, but I do hold that the class 2s might exist a chip young. As for the religious undertones, I teach in a Cosmic school then it would have been ok, but thank you for the heads upwardly!

I think the comments nearly religious undertones are interesting. I piece of work in a pretty liberal surface area, but we never accept problems using books like that. We don't talk about the religious symbolism, though. In that location'due south plenty to glean without going into that.

Inquire how many of your students have been watching the pic on cable. It has played SEVERAL times recently, and I would think that if they had already watched the movie, they would accept enough of a grasp of the plot to relish having the book read to them. Actually, maybe some of those at grade 3 level have already read i themselves.

For quaternary or 5th grades in a Catholic school it would exist nifty. The symbolism is easy to encounter and could inspire great discussion.

I would agree that mid-twelvemonth 2d course might exist iffy, but the main business organization might be the violence, which is probably tame compared to what many kids watch on Telly or in movies (or in video games). I think for myself, I might utilize it with caution, depending on the class. My chief business organisation might exist parents who are unfamiliar with The Chronicles of Narnia and might exist confused by the Christian allusions; some might wonder why a fairy-tale like story seems to correspond Jesus as a fictional brute in a brand believe country among mythical and fairy-tale creatures. I was surprised final year, when a missionary instructor was requesting copies of these books, simply ane other person in my church's prayer coming together was enlightened of the series, and most had never heard of C. S. Lewis. (The other fellow member and I explained the series to them). But I've used the novels twice in a Christian school setting with no concerns expressed.
